www.thesunnews.com/opinion/story/1165604.htmlToday's Sun News has a very interesting letter to the editor concerning the realities of the proposed Myrtle Beach property tax relief plan that is to use the 1 percent sales tax for it's revenue source. The writer a Mr or Ms R.D. Todd points out that everyone pays the 1 percent sales tax when they purchase most things in Myrtle Beach. The property tax relief is proposed at 90 percent of the property tax on an owner occupied residence. Thus those who own and reside in modest homes that are at the low end of the tax rate receive small amounts of tax credit. Conversely those at the higher end of the property tax schedule will receive very large amounts in their tax credits. Todd estimates that this will stretch from approximately several hundred dollars at the low end to Thousands of dollars at the high end. It's hard to believe that these numbers are in proportion with peoples payment on the 1 percent tax. Plus all of the generous souls who don't reside in homes they own or in Myrtle Beach who shop in MB and thus are helping to foot this bill. The rich get rich and the poor get poorer. Of course the rich folk have come out in force to dispel the myth that they unjustly benefit from this tax "gift"!
