A little experience from last year. Me and my wife headed to our usual quiet spot on the beach one afternoon (during f*gfest) only to be greeted by a 1/2 dozen marble-bag wearin', flamin', fairies playing some sort of game with little plastic balls on the beach. They became rather upset with us because they wanted the entire stretch of beach to themselves. When one approached me and asked me to relocate I cordially invited him to go over and penetrate his buddy (if you know what I mean....) They immediately, in a tizzy, (I think that's what f*gs call it) uprooted and left. Moral of the story. TELL THEM TO LEAVE!

This is a friendly reminder from the administrator whose fingers have been twitching on the delete button. These forums are not the place for ad hominem attacks and personal invective. We see enough of that from the other side and on the newspaper feedback forums. I don't believe in censoring anyone's opinions, including those which are emotional or controversial. At the same time, it is always useful before clicking on the POST button to ask if your note advances a cause, makes a point, or is just gratuitous. I understand completely and agree that the city's lockout at the BBQ stands in stark contrast to the welcoming attitude towards another group that is arguably far more controversial to the image the city claims it is trying to project. But, in my opinion, that view can be expressed without devolving into the kind of rhetoric that I see routinely thrown up against bikers without any justification. If you have a specific beef against specific activities or events, fair game. On the other hand, arguments that these folks are "sick" or "perverted" or "going to hell" or whatever seem to me to be generalities more likely to generate a lot more heat than light. It is hard to argue a live-and-let-live attitude for the rallies on the one hand, and at the same time toss out those kinds of jabs. Do so-called Gay Pride events have folks that act inappropriately for a public forum? You bet. Are there adult oriented activities that are in no-way "family friendly"? Sure. But, can't the same thing be said of the bike rallies? It takes all kinds and any large group of people will span the gamut.
It seems to me the proper focus of your ire is the city and their hypocritical and inconsistent policies, not to attack those who have not yet fallen out of their favor. But, that's just one man's opinion. What do I know?

Sorry. Practicing living up to their low expectations. You are right as I am incensed that the City is portraying this even as a Family and Community event when attacking the Bikers. At the same public place that the many Veterans were denied access some with invitations. As far as I am concerned this event needs to be publicized to the fullest and let the world judge MB on their own.

This started when they wanted bikers to leave and have the Gays of May , remember ad used across seas in Europe , May is the month for Gays , I think ran twice and MB called and had it stopped . Instead of bikers in leathers it would be European men in thongs and speedo's chasing the young boys around town ... lol ... Bible says Marriage should be Between Man and Women , humans can not reproduce any other normal way .... PERIOD ....

At the same public place that the many Veterans were denied access some with invitations. As far as I am concerned this event needs to be publicized to the fullest and let the world judge MB on their own. I'm with ya on the hypocrisy front. It will be interesting to hear them explain how vets don't measure up in their eyes, but drag queens in feathers and lace are their idea of the perfect MB tourist. My only point is that the gays aren't the ones who were marching into the council chambers demanding that the bikers be shown the door (at least not that I am aware of). They are just doing what they do. Isn't anything I'd wanna see rolling into town either, but the ones who did this to the bikers are sitting on the council, not having a party at the Train Depot. We can highlight the stark contrast and ask what the hell the Mayor is thinking without aiming fire at the wrong people. I don't have to like what the "Pride" folks are pushing in order to want to protect their rights. It doesn't have to be an either-or situation, and it seems to me that if we get into the business of wanting to chase off people whose primary offense is not criminal but aesthetic, then how is that mindset any different from the Mayhem folks? The rhetoric sure sounds pretty similar. The idea of arguing what is "family friendly" is a bit of a red herring. When you engage that argument, you give credence to the idea that the Mayor is allowed to chase off non-family-friendly groups once we decide who they are. I reject on principal that the Mayor and council can discriminate against any law abiding citizen regardless of if they like them or not, or if they should be "likeable". To me at least, the fundamental is that they should not (and don't) have the authority to chase off ANY tourists that choose to vacation or hold events in their city. If we get sucked into this "our group is better than your group" argument, the boys over at city hall will just sit back and watch us attack each other while they laugh their asses off. It's called divide and conquer. But maybe I am not getting something here?

I meant no offense when I shared my story. It was not ficticious. It truly happened. Perhaps a few of my words could have been better chosen. For that, I apologize if I offended anyone.

The irony of this is no matter what your feelings are we are all supposed to remain tolerant. That being said... Will there be a picture of the "Gay of the Day" in the Sun News as there is "Biker of the Day" during Bike Week? I bet not... Will Channel 15 News have camera crews inside Club Kryptonite to film the transvestites for the 6 o'clock news? I bet not... Will Mayor Rhodes enact ordinances to prevent flamboyant acts in front of young children? I bet not... Posters clearly state (and promote) alchohol consumption. Will there be Police Checkpoints set up within the city over the weekend? I bet not... Will a 1% tax be added to the books for clean-up and control of this event? I bet not... Will these people be stopped from engaging in these "Commitment Ceremonies" within City limits even though the State says that they are legal? I bet not... Will a small group of wealthy citizens that live on the north end of town gather together and form a grass-roots campaign to rid the City of this group of people? I bet not... Will this group be cited for gathering in public on the beach? I bet not... Will this group be monitored for noise levels in and around the train station? I bet not... Anyways... I think that I've made my point. Selective tourism will eventually bring death to what is known as Myrtle Beach.

Anyways... I think that I've made my point. Selective tourism will eventually bring death to what is known as Myrtle Beach. I hear 'ya and agree. Up front I said that the hypocrisy was breathtaking. What I was struggling with was how to pitch the story without making it sound like an argument in favor of booting more groups, rather than eliminating the assault on free assembly engaged in by the city.

I can't say that i agree with the gay peoples way of life, however until they attack me forcing their ways i tend to live and let live which is the way it should be. The fact that the city is promoting this as "family oriented" just adds proof in the pudding that the city has blatently discriminated against bikers. We should not attack the gays, but rather use the cities actons as further proof of their discrimination against us.

I took a shot at trying to balance it out with a new story up on the front page of the website. I'll leave it to you folks to decide if I got it right or not. If not, I'm sure I'll hear about it here, which is fine with me.

pat, i think you came dang near real close with your story on front page. The cities view on this event almost makes me think away from selective tourism and think anti-biker tourism. if they allow all other functions to carry on with their support it furthers the discrimination issue. discrimination against bikers and veterans many of which are one in the same.

You guys are a bit confused. The City does not go either way on this. They bury their collective head's in the sand and ignore it completely.
