Per the Sun News May 20, 2009 The city of Myrtle Beach is running radio ads throughout the Carolinas to discourage bikers from attending the upcoming Atlantic Beach Bikefest. The ads also ran ahead of the Cruisin' the Coast Spring Rally, according to Mark Kruea, city spokesman. Myrtle Beach is "a great place to visit," the ad says, "but don't expect to find a bike rally." The ads are running in these radio markets: Florence, Sumter-Columbia, Charleston, Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson, Fayetteville, Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, N.C., and Wilmington, N.C., Kruea said. To listen to the ad go to the following: www.thesunnews.com/news/breaking_news/story/907563.html

Someone needs to record that for future referance...it says "the rallies were to loud, to long etc.., so new laws were put in place" Now if I remember the mayor and council said these new laws were for SAFETY not because they were to loud, long etc.., I'm hurt that the mayor would tell such a lie, and I wore a helmet thinking they were helping me...BUT I DIDN'T SPEND A DIME IN 09 in the city of lie's, coruption and slander and one STUPID MAYOR!!!!!!!! not sure the city realizes all the comments just make for a better argument at the supreme court and in civil lawsuits

As reported at: www.carolinalive.com/news/news_story.aspx?id=302425Don't expect to find a bike rally in Myrtle Beach. That's what the city is telling bikers around the Carolinas. Bikefest organizers say the city's radio advertising campaign has led bikers to think the event has been cancelled. The Atlantic Beach City Manager says his phone is ringing off the hook from bikers confused about whether the Memorial Day event will happen. But Myrtle Beach officials say the city just wants to make sure bikers aren't surprised when they get here. The radio commercial says, "Myrtle Beach will not be the location for any bike rallies during May." "Myrtle Beach is not anti-biker, but the huge motorcycle rallies are over." The commercials mention the city's new laws restricting helmets, loud mufflers and street parties. City officials say the ads were meant to inform bikers who may be coming here, that the rallies will not be the same as in the past. Myrtle Beach spokesman Mark Kruea says, "We don't want anyone to come here with false expectations. We want them to know the city's position that the new laws are in place." But Atlantic Beach City Manager Kenneth McIver says the result is confusion. "We're just getting a lot of calls just regarding whether or not we are having bikefest, whether or not it's been cancelled and just sort of not really sure of what's going on." McIver complained that the ads specifically mentioned the "Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Bikefest," which he says is a registered trademark. "I think they were trying to name the festival instead of naming the town but in doing so, it put more confusion out in the minds of the listeners." So the city dropped the mention of Atlantic Beach in the ads, but kept them running. McIver says it doesn't seem like Myrtle Beach made the same effort prior to the Harley Rally, but Kruea says that's not true. "The same commercial, in fact, ran some last week and is running some this week. We did not change the commercial and it mentions both events in the commercial." As for how all this will affect attendance at Bikefest this weekend, both men say it's too early to tell. Myrtle Beach spent around $29,000 to air the commercials in eight radio markets in the Carolinas.

Did anyone hear the ad that supposedly ran for the HD rally?
This one is solely aimed at the BBW in my opinion, since they used an African-American male voice for the ad.
I'm really curious to hear the HD radio ad. Seems my peeps in the same target market heard the ad for BBW but didn't hear the HD ad.

Nice, accurate, sinister-look pic of Rhodes.
It always amazes me how anyone can edit out both the puppet strings...
...and who is pulling them.

BOOST now has a copy of these adds and brought it up at the last City Council meetings. Their attorney is considering a lawsuit Some citizens that were AR were actually shocked at these adds. Thanks all for the great detective work in exposing The City Council and the Chamber for what they are. More to come I am sure as this story is long from over. We are stronger together.

It never ceases to amaze me (keeping in mind that I've only lived here for a year but...) how the politicos just seem to do as they see fit without any regard for law, standards or consequences. Is there no "watchdog" from a State level that can be contacted to protect citizens rights? Someone needs to step in.

Is there no "watchdog" from a State level that can be contacted to protect citizens rights? Someone needs to step in. We were in full swing up until 1 1/2 years ago. It seem like the City went to hell all at once after they tore the Pavilion down. Then we have the selective tourism, out of control taxes and City leadership that continually makes poor choices for the economic growth of a tourist mecca. The Mayor has his own side business called the "Beach Ball Classic" which he profits over $50k every year plus free use of the Convention Center and kick backs from the hospitality business. During the Beach Ball Classic you have a City of wild kids out of control in the Mall, restaurants, stores and streets for a week or so. Do we complain, no, they're tourist and we put up with it because as residents we expect that! This City has taken a huge dive since Rhodes took office. I can still remember him saying during his campaign on how he was going to support the Bikers. Just one more lie out of his mouth he has been caught at. We need McBride back, I know what kind of Mayor he was. It will take him to get Myrtle Beach back in business again!

Maybe I did'nt pay enough attention back then but the only gripe I heard about him was when he offered to bump a biker..... Atleast he took the people into consideration..
