Upcoming Events Give Bikers a Chance to Give Back
by Eric "Big E" Rutherford - for Weekly Surge
There are a number of events scheduled for the coming weeks so I thought I would take this opportunity to share a few to give you all the scoop and to help support some of the worthy causes that will benefit from these events. Despite the reputation we bikers may have with some people, I have known very few people who will rally (literally) for a cause or give more selflessly in their community than bikers … and we know how to have fun doing it!
Today marks the first day of the North Carolina state HOG Rally in Mt. Airy, N.C., which runs through Saturday. Complete details can be found at www.ncstatehogrally.com.
Locally, but still outside the city limits of Myrtle Beach for all of you boycotters, Saturday is the sixth annual American Cancer Society Ride for Life Poker Run to be held at the Carolina Entertainment Complex located at 1548 U.S. 501 South in Marion. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and is $20 per rider and $5 per passenger. There will be free food, more than $1,100 in cash prizes, a 50/50 drawing and door prizes. All proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. There will also be a section of the complex reserved for individuals to buy and sell motorcycles. Selling and shopping in the area is free, but organizers would appreciate a donation from anyone bringing a bike to sell. According to a press release, John Gallo with The Carolina Entertainment Complex said, “The public is welcome, at no charge, to come out and listen to the bands, check out the vendors and the motorcycles. Last year my friend Bill Jolly, owner of Charter Homes, surprised everyone with a fireworks show. I won’t be surprised if he does it again this year.” In a unique twist for those who don’t or can’t ride, anyone interested can take part in the traditional poker run on a tour bus sponsored by WEGX Eagle 92.9 morning hosts Mudflap & Mattie and Coast to Coast Bus Charters of Conway. To reserve your seat, go to www.eagle929online.com or call The Carolina Entertainment Complex 843-431-9008. There are a limited amount of seats available. For additional information about the poker run, sponsorships or vendors, call Paula at 464-5479 or Deana at 464-5352.
On Sept. 5, Myrtle Beach Harley-Davidson will be hosting an open house featuring a bike wash & wings by Hooters, a live band and a bike show. The dealership is at 4710 S. Kings Highway, just OUTSIDE of the Myrtle Beach city limits. If you need more information, call the dealership at 369-5555.
From Sept. 11-13, Business Owners Organized to Support Tourism (BOOST), who have been outspoken supporters of protecting Bike Week tourism and currently have a lawsuit against the city of Myrtle Beach, and Freestyle Music Park will be hosting a weekend long event, called Grand Strand Freedom Fest. According to the Web site at www.grandstrandfreedomfest.com, “the event will be held in honor and memory of the victims, families and first responders of Sept. 11, 2001 – and of the brave women and men of America’s Armed Forces who have been protecting us ever since. A portion of the proceeds raised by this not-for-profit event will be directed to Operation First Response, an organization that has been supporting wounded soldiers and their families since 2001. Highlights of the weekend will include a Concert for America by The Long Bay Symphony (Friday evening at La Belle Amie Vineyard) and a daylong festival featuring a pre-tour concert by country music superstar LeAnn Rimes on Saturday night at Freestyle Music Park. Additional entertainment include afternoon concerts by Charlie Floyd and Southern Express, Jeffrey Allen Edwards and Southern Blues and ’70s superstar Billy Joe Royal. …With a group of America’s wounded heroes leading the way, visitors to Freestyle Music Park will also enjoy a parade featuring local high school marching bands and the roar of Rolling Thunder and other veteran, police, fire and rescue-oriented motorcycles through the park beginning at 1 p.m. Exhibits from the likes of the Pearl Harbor Foundation, the Sept. 11 Memorial Foundation and others will dot the beautiful walkways through the park.” For ticket prices and more information go to www.grandstrandfreedomfest.com.
On Sept. 19, there will be a poker run to support the North Myrtle Beach Humane Society. Sign up between 11 a.m. and noon at Capt. Poo's Blue Marlin at 2200 Little River Neck Road in North Myrtle Beach. The registration fee of $20 per person includes an event shirt and the run ends at Swing Bridge Saloon. For more information, contact Pam Bane at 241-0182.
And of course, Sept. 30-Oct. 4 are the dates for this year’s upcoming Fall Rally, which I will cover fully in upcoming editions of Weekly Surge.
