I checked out the shack meter also. Downloaded and read the owners manual. Didn't see any mention of the ability to recalibrate. Heck, if they are using the shack meter I will dish out $50 just to measure my pipes. If i am under 89 I will ride the city carrying my meter with me for comparison. They are using the Radio Shack Model: 33-2055 $49.99 which only has a 90 warranty. Any equipment used in law enforcement such as Radar, Breathalyazer etc has to be Calibrated and Certified before it can be used to uphold the law. Any lawyer can beat this one and I bet one of the helmet lawyers would help you out.

Funny, when I looked at the Radio shack model specs it doesn't even specify if it meets any standards, which are clearly stated in the SAE Document as: A sound level meter meeting the Type 1, Type S1A, Type 2, or Type S2A requirements of ANSI S1.4-1983. And a Sound level Calibrator accurate to +-.05dB.
As for the device itself the SAE has this to say: Instrumentation—Type 1 instrumentation, which generally can provide the most accurate measurements, should be used when the need for accuracy is great, such as certification of exhaust systems, or enforcement action which may result in some form of penalty.
Type 2 instrumentation could be appropriate for some enforcement work, such as a preliminary screening test, or for general data gathering. On the other hand, instrumentation which is less precise than Type 1 or Type 2 may be appropriate in cases such as at a racetrack or motorcycle park, when the primary interest is securing some noise reduction from the motorcycles operated within, and not measuring for the purpose of meeting specific maximum noise limits. Selection of equipment should reflect the need for accuracy (particularly considering any consequences) balanced against cost. Caution should be exercised, however, when selecting equipment which does not conform with ANSI standards. Experience with consumer electronic types of sound level meters indicates most such meters do not possess operating characteristics of sufficient accuracy or consistency to yield meaningful results. Meters which meet obsolete ANSI S1.4 Type 3 specifications, however, are sufficiently accurate for less demanding applications such as racetrack enforcement.
Also per the SAE: 7.9 Calibration of the sound level meter using the sound level calibrator (see 4.2) shall be made immediately before the first test of each test day and should be made at the end of each test day. Field calibration should be made at intervals of no more than 1 h.
Looking at the owner's manual for the RS unit it shows no procedure for calibration, nor does it show what if any standards it complies with. Any Good meter will have this prominently displayed.
Also are the MBPD using an Anemometer to measure wind speed accurate to 10% @ 20 mph? If the wind speed is more than 20 mph the test procedure is invalid.
Did anyone on the board here have their bike tested during the "Courtesy Checks" If so have you compared their testing to the SAE procedure??

just went and gave radio shack $50 for a meter. It does have ability to be recalibrated but DOES NOT meet any ansi specs Also only has + or - 2 db accuracy Specifies in manual should be used for home/hobbiest use only.

I think MB would meet the classification of home/ hobbiest...Heck they do everything else without reading the instructions.

Finally got around to checking my pipes with the radio shack meter. I reckon MB won' be hearing me this year. My Screaming Eagle slip on's measured 97db on the A weighted scale at 20 inches at 45 degrees. Shucks, I didn't think I wus THAT LOUD. Just for giggles I measured full radius from 90 degrees to inline. Lowest reading I got was 95db. Even with the shack meter, that is a little too far out for me to chance having my ride impounded. Hope all will understand why I don't ride on the city. Don't need to get locked up for assalting one of MB's finest and a tow truck driver

When you get to the other side gas it and hit the limiter and it will blow it back out ;D ;D ;D ;D

Bro, have you discussed with Gary the idea of ABATE or one of the other local groups offering courtesy noise checks at one of the locales outside the city. I keep seeing people asking the same question "What do I clock in at" and it makes no sense for everyone to be running out to buy their own meter. Seems like you could offer the checks for $1 or some nominal amount to recoup the cost of a high quality meter and would be plenty of folks who would be interested in it, and then mass together all those who pass for a ride through the city. Just a thought. If ABATE or one of the other groups is interested, there is still enough time to set it up and promote it on the site and get the word out...

As I said my pipes chacked 97db with the shack meter. would still pay reasonable fee to have checked with a certified meter. I have researched sources for meters on line, and it appears to take about an extra 2 weeks to get one that is certified.

Bro Both ABATE and Rolling Thunder are having meet and greets at various entry points. There is an ABATE meeting this weekend and I will bring it up. BOOST is going to be doing the same and also advertising on Billboards

But I do know that my Rineharts would not pass. If BigBucks screaming Eagles didn't pass, then I know these wouldn't pass. I have different baffles that I'm putting in for the rally. I'll load them up with 00 buckshot
