Really, the MB ordinances won't apply to me because I will not go inside the city limits. Well, I may go inside the city limits if I am in town for Memorial Day weekend.
I just wish that the HD rally was postponed for a couple of weeks so the city could try out the new ordinances on the Atlantic Beach bikers first.

It looks like Liz Gilland is using some common sense concerning the limiting of vendors for the rally. This is from today's Sun News: "But County Council Chairwoman Liz Gilland said she was unsure how she would cast her vote. She said she did not think restricting vendors would solve the problems with rowdy behavior during the rallies. "If you don't have vendors, what are folks going to do?" she said. "I don't want to invite folks here to have a rally with our name on it when we don't provide anything to do other than you come, you gather at the bars, and you drink all day." OK, something else to think about.......Why is Horry County Council discussing a bike rally that Myrtle Beach says doesn't exist? Also, Liz used the word "invite". I'll bet Mayor Rhodes butt puckers up when he reads that.

We need to all show up for the meeting tonight to support those on the County Council who are fighting for us. I will be easy to spot. I will be wearing my new Roach Line Horry County Bike Week Shirt. ;D

Just 2 thoughts here - Exactly what are the EPA standards for motorcycle noise? I've tried calling and emailing the EPA with no result. Also - has anybody measured the noise from the MBPD bikes and checked THEIR bikes for compliance labeling? I would be willing to bet that they are not in compliance with their own enactments. Up here in the DC area, several of the police departments run aftermarket exhausts on their motorcycles for "Safety reasons." I have been going to Myrtle Beach Bike Week for 5 years now, and am appalled. I plan on parking my bike just outside of city limits and walking to my friends' houses in the city, but not spending one thin dime in the city this year. These same friends agree with me, and they are taking this to heart in their daily lives.

amsmith170 Good points and welcome to ibiker. On the home page under blogs is Hells Bells its Decibels. You can find the information there and references are in the info section. The City exempted the Police Motorcycles as emergency vehicles. My understanding is that they didn't pass. I know you are shocked.

They didn't, which is why the law was modified to include emergency vehicles. I believe that the city has canceled their contract with HD and will be going to Hondas soon.

Thanks for the info guys. Doesn't it seem a bit hypocritical that they exempt their own vehicles, but expect us to follow a more restrictive standard? Just another random thought on the issue...

Just one other thought - and please bear in mind that I'm not a local, and am sometimes rather ignorant of local politics.... Could the new laws also be motivated by some petty need for retribution by the City Council for Harley-Davidson moving their corporate sponsored events out of the Convention Center (and out of the City) Hard Rock Park (which if I heard correctly, is bankrupt)? Thanks for the informative discussion here!

Thanks for the informative discussion here! If this is not part of the mayor's plan, it's just a bonus. When HD left the convention center, a lot of money left with them.

I'm not sure how much this particular situation contributed to the sudden hatred of "all things biker". But I firmly believe that at some point the true motive will come out.
