Here we go again... big controversy over the dates and duration of the Spring Rally(s). The local HD dealer has decided to set the dates on their own which will cause a de facto increase in the duration and an overlap with the Atlantic Beach Bikefest. There is so far NO one "governing body" that has the legal authority to set the "dates". Horry County does exercise some control via being very stingy with the all important "Vendor Permits", kind of the "Tail wagging the dog" situation in my view. Some feel that the "Rally participants follow the vendors" and others feel that "the vendors follow the participants" some truth in both claims I believe. The politicians are in an uproar, Horry County, Myrtle Beach and Atlantic Beach officials are scrambling over what to do. Horry County Council is entertaining the idea of NOT issuing ANY Vendor Permits. Horry County ABATE spokesman seen on the TV news not happy with the extension. So the gauntlet has been thrown down... What say you?

Unless Horry County Clowncil decides to change the date, which I do not see happening. It's either stay with what we have or they will yack the permits then it will no more rally but I can see Military Appreciation Days warping into a rally but the numbers won't be here. The numbers are always in DC for the National Rolling Thunder event.

Who knows? it could turn out well (I hope).

This is far from well but may end that way. First and foremost I suggest we educate people that this is just one businessman who's avarice is only surpassed by his lack of caring about the mess he makes for the Local Rider and our Communities This will extend the Rally by 10 days and a weekend which is the better part of 2 weeks and is exactly what we do not need at this time. This Rally lost a lot of organization when the Carolina Harley Dealers Association left and we all know why. Honestly something had to be done. My objections were always Constitutional Issues and we have none here. Tom Rice and County Council and John Rhodes and City Council did Nothing that I know of to inhibit the last Rally and in fact had Stripper Poles and a Tattoo Exhibit at the Convention Center. The number of Pine Lakes and Dune's Club hats at these events were astounding. ;D So far I agree and Support Gary Balcom and the Horry County Abate in this matter. We need to stand up and be counted so that all the hard work of the past couple of years are not lost. I feel we need to support and work with the County Council and hopefully convince them to aim their ire at Phil and not us. I feel pulling all Vendor Permits is letting Phil win. You have legislated to the lowest denominator and many good people will suffer for deeds not of their own. Hope to see many at the next County Council meeting which is Tuesday Feb. 7th at 6 PM. WHO DAT GONNA Beat Them Giants ?

I can't help but wonder if along with the non-Bikers, the Bikers attending will be "Rallied out" well before the Myrtle Beach H.D.'s ending date. The dealership may be entertaining very few customers towards the end.
Maybe if the authorities issue the vendor permits as they had originally planned, most of the problems that are causing the worry over the extension will just kind of fade away on their own.

Sun News today, "The debate (over the rally dates etc) has forced members of the biking community to again defend their hobby"
I don't understand this, Who is attacking the Biker Community? Business persons and local officials are having a disagreement over the dates of the event. Some in the Councils have proposed not issuing any vendor permits as a way to force the merchants to do what they want. No new anti biker laws (remember the city only helmet law) have even been suggested. The problem appears to be worries over traffic resulting from overlapping dates and the heavy traffic being around for a longer time.
It's a dispute between the government and the merchants, If no vendor permits are issued all of the existing businesses will be here welcoming the visiting and local bikers and their money. It would be a shame to miss the vendors & their unusual merchandise, but it's still a great place to visit & ride in the usually balmy temperatures.

It appears the same old anti-biker faction, which I really believe is an anti-tourist faction, are the ones complaining and making the noise. I believe their goal continues to get rid of motorcycles in general, and rallies in particular, to start with. A lot of voters who do not depend on the status of the local economy for their livelihood. For the record, I have not been to Myrtla Beach since the Fall of 2008. We do remember all the good times and miss the oldest rally in the country, but at this point in time, Daytona, Panama City and Leesburg offer so much more, welcome us and like the money we spend. I really believe in being good tourist and respecting the locals, but going where you are wanted. I hope we get back to Myrtle Baech someday.

I was away for a week or so, they have a pretty good sized rally in Florida just a bit South of St Augustine. Has there been any hot news about the Myrtle Beach Rally that I missed?
