If I may.... I've been witness to an annual "H.O.G. Rally". When I lived up north the National H.O.G. held it's yearly gathering at (what was then) The Centrum in Worcester, Massachusetts. Most of the rally was strictly for membership and most events were H.O.G. related. The upside was that it drew thousands of people to the hotels, restaurants and surrounding attractions. As far as this being something that the local, general population would be involved with is highly unlikely. The fact that they are trying to plan it during what is typically the Fall Rally is questionable to their motives? ?? You can liken this to the Shriners having their yearly Convention in Myrtle Beach. Most folks don't even realize they're around town....

I'm not crazy about a rally in NMB because the 1st weekend of the usual spring rally they have Mayfest then the 2nd weekend they have Blue Crab Festival. Thse 2 events are really awesome but not exactly biker orientated. I've done both & I really would like to see a community cater to the biker community, close down streets, sponsor events...

Stern You lost me. The Spring Rally if that is what you meant is May 7th to May 16th. The proposed HOG rally is May 19th to May23rd. Having said that didnt this event usually happen during the Spring Rally ? You are right about locals not attending much altho my view is they would have some things HOG only and some vendors and outdoor things for all. We will see if they even have it but my read is they will decide by next week and get this show on the road or not.

Sorry... I thought that it was being planned at the same time as the Rally.

From my experience, HOG events are generally HOG only and even then some activities require preregistration or you don't get in. I experienced that first hand at the NC State HOG Rally a couple of years ago at OBX

I experienced that first hand at the NC State HOG Rally a couple of years ago at OBX I think this is what Stern was referring to is that you will likely not know that they are here. They have private affairs and do their own thing. Which is why this article is so misleading. This is not a Rally in my definition of a Rally but more of a Convention. I dropped my HOG membership this year so I guess I am out for the events but wish them well.

I haven't seen it posted anywhere else, but I deducted yesterday that the HOG event should be BETTER compared to the Goldwing Road Riders Association's events. However - the media, MBMP ("Myrtle Beach Mad Politicians"), and various local forum trolls would never admit nor recognize that...

The problem the "locals" will say is if this convention comes, there will actually be MORE days of bike "rallies" in May than in the past. It will be almost non stop from May 7th to the 25th or so.
I almost think this will add more fuel to the fire for those anti-bikers out there.
As for HOG itself, I have no opinion. I don't believe in going to BIKER events that are only open to a certain few, or to have to pay money to join a membership to attend an event. I prefer events like charity rides, poker runs, etc... where you can choose to donate, choose to ride, or just plain show up.

Bird, you are very correct in that the HOG events are more of a convention than a Rally. That is precisely why , after my experience at OBX, I haven't cared to attend any of their activities since. At that time i was just going to check them out and I was a member, but had not preregistered therefore they would not let me in.
Range, I also feel you are very correct, as always, in your comparison to the Gold Wing Riders Association.
Bikergal, I think you have the right attitude. If I can't just show up and be part then I don't belong there to begin with

Bikergal Welcome to ibiker. I hope you enjoy the site. If so please spread the word. I am with you on this one and that is why I say the report is factual but misleading. This isn't a Rally and they will do exactly what you said and will portray it as Bike Month. Interesting that Range cant find it posted elsewhere. Hummm Call me cynical. Can you say stir the pot? ??

As they were turning onto Ocean Blvd from 17 to get to the Springmaid resort, they were stopped by MBPD and given tickets for not wearing a helmet. When they told the cop that they did not know about a having to wear a helmet in SC they were told only in the City of Myrtle Beach and that they were in the city limits. So here is your ticket. If you don't like it then fight it. As to say these riders were pissed off big time.

Welcome to Myrtle Beach, heres your ticket and enjoy your stay. Just more unhappy tourists to spread the word, wonder if they will be back? Nope, they will NOT be back - they booked Charleston for their 2010 event.
They DO rotate their events, but from what I understand many of their members were NOT happy with Myrtle Beach in general for ANY kind of meet anymore and do not plan to return any time in the forseeable future.
This - despite the City of Myrtle Beach claiming that they had absolutely no concerns with the Goldwing Road Riders Association's group and activities, and claiming they welcome them with open arms.
