I wouldnt get too excited yet but we will see what the attitude is at tonights meeting. All I am willing to say is that there are some on the Councils that have extended a hand to test the waters. www.thesunnews.com/news/local/story/1209112.html

One of the things that is obvious very quick is they do things differently in NMB. The elected officials include the residents, the businesses, the tourists they need , and people that may be effected by their decisions. In other words all are invited to the table. Did anyone know that NMB has been testing Vertical Axis Wind Turbines? Well the test results have been very positive so the first one will go up on the Avista Hotel very soon. There are 68 high-rises in NMB and they will be slated for this addition as well if the businesses want them. They also have contracted a SC firm to do them which will bring more jobs to the area. These people are light years ahead of what we have in MB. I 73 was a hot topic as well. Talked to Brad Dean mostly about Veteran issues. I think I wrote in Welcome Home Woody that the MBACC was at that welcome home and in fact they were. Brad said that MB is committed to the welcome homes and would continue that worthy endeavor. On this we agree. I would not look for any support for Freedom Fest however , at least as long as BOOST is involved and on this we strongly disagree. As far as the Rally the article is factual but misleading and that may be intentional. It is not a Rally but rather the HD Harley Owners Group is planning what I would call a Convention. There are some outside activities planned as well and maybe some rides. The HOG has made some interesting demands and are also looking at other spots. The interesting thing to me is, and I could be wrong, but hasn't the HOG group usually done this at the same time as our traditional Rally in years past? I seem to remember that they did so why the date change ? Most seemed to welcome the idea but we all know NMB seems happy to take the millions of dollars that Tom Rice says MB doesn't want. I say no problem. Not A Dime In 09 and Do It Again In 2010. As a side note I do not expect an answer from Horry County on an After Rally Report but I did find out A Tax revenue for MB is down close to 20% this year so far. Things aren't as Rosy as some would have us believe. I know you are all shocked. ;D

MYRTLE Beach could learn some quite valuable lessons from NORTH Myrtle Beach: 1. NORTH Myrtle Beach has solidly and fairly applied LAW ENFORCEMENT every year to and during ALL major activities - including both Harley Rallies, Atlantic Beach "Bikefest", Shagger's events, etc. They did NOT pay attention nor cater to special interest/preferential-treatment advocacy groups like the NAACP; instead having a "line drawn in the sand" of what was tolerable and what was not - with some reasonable discretion, and making that fact well-know through formal communication, reputation, and word-of-mouth.
In contrast, MYRTLE Beach attempted to accommodate advocacy groups by briefing/instructing law enforcement to OVERLOOK most violations/violators in ONE select group (out of fear of intimidation and fabricated racist accusations), and then subsequently lumping THAT event with COMPLETELY SEPARATE, UNRELATED, and DIFFERENT (excluding race factors) events in order to cover for the CITY'S failure to manage anything.
2. NORTH Myrtle Beach did not create any UNJUSTIFIED and UNNECESSARY traffic patterns (NEEDED and justified BY ACTUAL UNIQUE FACTORS for one event only) just to satisfy an intimidating advocacy group - and resulting in law enforcement being assigned to a concentrated ghost town effort while FAILING to place adequate patrols in OTHER areas of their jurisdiction in order to detect and enforce ACTUAL violations in MOSTLY RESIDENTIAL areas.
MYRTLE Beach did EXACTLY that - and thus actually was at fault for CAUSING THE CONDITIONS ALLOWING/PROMOTING many of the violations and substance for citizen complaints as the actual violators. 3. NORTH Myrtle Beach has actually INVOLVED itself with these major events, thereby being able to help MANAGE them from within, and having EFFECTIVE means to relay information and guidelines to organizers and participants.
In contrast, MYRTLE Beach totally DETACHED itself FROM select major events, thus attempting to DICTATE TO them from the "outside" - and subsequently resulting in this completely INeffective method that generated their ABSOLUTELY FALSE claim that these events were "unmanageable".
NORTH Myrtle Beach ALSO has its BIGGEST advantage - it, as opposed to MYRTLE Beach, is not RUN and COMPLETELY CONTROLLED by one select corps of shady-operating influential ANTI-TOURIST people with endless supplies of "funny money" to get their way in order to OVERTLY cater to STRICTLY residential aspects while establishing a master plan of commerce that will only further enrich themselves with no regard to the traditions and prior reputation of the Grand Strand area of being a major attraction for both tourists and those who relocate for reasons OTHER than an eternally-silent retired life.

Range Some very on target analysis. I would say you hit the proverbial nail on the head. Like I said these people think outside the box and as you said they treat all the same. Their laws and ability to enforce them equally sets them apart. Additionally if this Convention is held everyone including the residents and the participants will know all the details before the first tourist arrives. If any roads will be closed, if so when, how will the residents have to deal with anything, rides, etc. They don't start building a Boardwalk and then ask for suggestions like MB. Too late to put in bathrooms/showers/changing stations because no one planned for the piping and the thing is too far along. Just like Market Commons. Beautiful except for the porta-johns everywhere for any event. And hope you don't need to use a rest room as you walk your dog around that 1 mile lake. I could go on and on but the bottom line is you get the Government you deserve and MB has theirs. Sooooo Not A Dime In 09 and Do It Again In 2010 NMB,MI,GC,LR,PI you will be seeing a lot of me

It appears to me that NMB must have been using MB as an example for a long time. AN example of HOW NOT TO RUN A CITY ;D

The helmet ordinances did not come up but the reports on the dates in February are accurate as to when the case will be heard. The courts may or may not rule at that time.

Last time I checked, Myrtle Beach spent millions fighting the NAACP in Federal Court. There is no way Atlantic Beach or North Myrtle Beach would ever stand up to the NAACP. What exactly are they overlooking? Do the crime stats for both events support your hypothesis? I have doubts that the NMB Department of Public Safety could even plan, yet alone execute a traffic plan similar to Myrtle Beach. Again, the NAACP has never put any real pressure on NMB. If they ever did, NMB would cave to their demands. [/b][/quote] Agree on this point.

Last time I checked, Myrtle Beach spent millions fighting the NAACP in Federal Court. There is no way Atlantic Beach or North Myrtle Beach would ever stand up to the NAACP. They didn't/don't NEED to. The City of Myrtle Beach made itself vulnerable and a target by showing weakness when they made concessions and caterings TO the NAACP JUST to appease them. In contrast, NORTH Myrtle Beach and Atlantic Beach did NOT make unnecessary and unjustified identical changes to BOTH events just for the sake of appearing to "treat them the same". The NAACP saw that fair and reasonable guidelines and practices were already in place in both of those municipalities that applied to ALL events - and left them alone. Atlantic Beach sure didn't create the same traffic patterns in their town, and a "traffic chute" off Rt 17 during the Harley Rallies, like they HAVE to during the BikeFest - because the massive congestion is during ONLY the BikeFest. During the Harley rallies, NEITHER Myrtle Beach, Atlantic Beach, nor North Myrtle Beach have gridlock and masses of people in their towns that require such controls - because the vast majority of Harley Rally events are ORGANIZED activities at actual venues spread ALL OVER THE GRAND STRAND. The NAACP KNEW that North MB and Atlantic could account for what they do - whether it's same, similar, or different treatment and management actions during each event - because they were appropriate, reasonable, and justified to the event. The NAACP also knew that the City of Myrtle Beach was not PROVIDING nor CONTENDING/standing firm with the similar and reasonable justifications IT had for any of the same, similar, or different management actions THEY had in place - and the NAACP acted on the City of Myrtle Beach ONLY for that reason. What exactly are they overlooking? Do the crime stats for both events support your hypothesis? It's not a hypothesis; not even a null hypothesis. It's based on ACTUAL and first-hand experience of operational briefings during AB "Bikefest" of officers being SPECIFICALLY INSTRUCTED to NOT enforce any law where a commotion, escalation, or outright civil disturbance - especially that would be documented by photo/video - could result from an inquiry or arrest for anything other than a defined "serious crime of violence". I have doubts that the NMB Department of Public Safety could even plan, yet alone execute a traffic plan similar to Myrtle Beach. Again, the NAACP has never put any real pressure on NMB. If they ever did, NMB would cave to their demands. The NAACP won't fight someone with a history, tradition, and establishment of fair, equal, and/or reasonable treatment of people by means of codified laws and proper/consistent enforcement techniques. They look for vulnerable targets - like the City of Myrtle Beach, who lacks those qualities and instead attempts to appease at every turn...
