For those interested, we have put a copy of the MB Chamber of Commerce Tax Return up on the website for viewing. It is for the most recent tax year and was filed Sep 2008. You will find it at: www.ibiker.org/MBCOCTAX2007.pdfWe are still looking through it, but two interesting items immediately jumped off the page... First, they had about 18 milion dollars in income, only 1 million of which came from membership dues. The rest came in the form of government grants and sponsorships. Given that 'voluntary' member dues only amount to 6% of their income and the rest comes directly or indirectly from government and other sources, who do they really work for? Sure seems like they are an arm of government masquerading as a private non-profit, unanswerable to the taxpayers. The same group who will now be receiving the new 1% sales tax proceeds and spending it supposedly in your behalf. Don't the MB citzens mind that they will have absolutely no voice, control, or even influence on how this public tax will be used? Oh, wait. Trust in Mayor Rhodes. He knows what is good for you. Secondly, on page 3 where they list their primary activities justifying their existence, the first line item states "PROMOTED THE GRAND STRAND AREA FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL AREA BUSINESSES". Hmmm, isn't this the same group walking hand in hand with the Mayor and City Council to chase away 500 million dollars in motorcycle tourist revenues and even operate a website for that purpose? I wonder how those businesses who saw their revenues plummet 40% or more over last year for the month of May feel about this sworn statement by the Chamber on their tax return? I bet the businesses joining HELP and BOOST aren't feeling like they benefited from the Chamber's actions!

Isn't that something like 8 times the average wages here. That sounds like a lot to me but since I am a biker someone of more education will have to splain dat 2 me

[glow=red,2,300]From the Internal Revenue Code rules governing 501(c)(6) organizations:[/glow]
In General An IRC 501(c)(6) organization is a membership organization characteristically supported by dues. While such an organization may receive a substantial portion or even the primary part of its income from non-member sources, membership support, both in the form of dues and involvement in the organization's activities, must be at a meaningful level.
Question: Does 5.5% of it’s income from membership dues qualify as “meaningful level”?

Now the Chamber wants to close Hwy 31 for a triathlon. Close Hwy 31? Can you imagine the traffic nightmare? Isn't traffic one of the complaints about the rallies? So far, WMBF is reporting that SC DOT is refusing to close Hwy 31. Liz Gilland and the Chamber are begging DOT to close it. The website in case anyone wants to tell DOT how much Hwy 31 means to you is www.scdot.org/contact . Here is the hidden story in the Scum News www.thesunnews.com/news/local/story/925363.html

Here is the hidden story in the Scum News www.thesunnews.com/news/local/story/925363.htmlI wrote a note to the SCDOT about the use of S.C. 31 for sports use: www.scdot.org/contactTo SCDOT In reference to Horry Council Chairwoman Liz Gilland trying to get the S.C. Department of Transportation to allow a part of S.C. 31 to be closed off for athletes during the competition for a USA Triathlon is wrong and unfair to commuters that use S.C. 31 from 544 to RT 9 for their daily commute. The road was designed for vehicle traffic and built from funds and tax dollars for that for that exact purpose and not a sports arena. It shows one more attempt by our local governments to overstep their boundaries or misuse their powers for their own benefit disregarding the tax payers. Rod Miller

So they made $18 Million last year and they're expecting an additional $15 Million from this new tax? that's a lot of money, how much does it take to convince people to vacation here? Oh I get it, they need twice as much money this year because it only took half that amount to run out 500,000 repeat visitors this year. Ok now I'm onto the Jethro Bo dean math here. Dang, I need a job working for the chamber. Oops, I can't, I don't have the right last name. My Bad!

They are but they aren't round 2. You just can't make this stuff up. This response is a bit different then the one I posted above. Smoke and mirrors.
